The Family Grain Mill
The Family Grain Mill is unique in that it's a modular system that offers grain mill, flaker mill, and several other attachments, as well as a choice of hand powered, electric, or both. You can mix & match the components any way you like. In hand powered form, it's one of the easiest mills to turn, yet still grinds flour at a pretty respectable speed. In motorized form, it's the quietest electric mill we've seen.
Previously we've always preferred hand powered mills and stayed away from electric mills. But with the Family Grain Mill you can have the convenience of an electric mill without giving up the utility and practicality of a mill that doesn't depend on electricity.
The Family Grain Mill is the least expensive mill we've seen that actually works well, grinds reasonably fine, and is reasonably fast. Simple, functional design, easy to use and easy to clean. The quality is what you'd expect in any good quality kitchen appliance. Designed in Germany, various components made in Germany and/or elsewhere in Europe. Lifetime limited warranty from the importer.
Grain Mill Attachment Will easily grind wheat, oats, rye, barley, spelt, buckwheat, millet, rice, kamut, spices, some dried herbs, sesame, soybeans, etc. It will grind corn in 2 passes, but will not do popcorn because it's too hard and will damage the mill. Low RPM even with the motor base, so nutrients aren't destroyed by heat during grinding. We were surprised at what fine flour the hardened steel grinding burrs can produce -- much finer than other mills we've seen with similarly designed burrs. Quickly & easily adjusts for any grind from very fine flour to cracked grain, or anything in between. We were at first skeptical of the importer's claim that the mill does not produce dust, but we found that unlike most other mills, it really does produce almost no dust. Large 5-cup feed hopper.
In our tests the Family Grain Mill ground one cup of flour in about 2 minutes with hand power, or about 1.75 minutes with the motorized base, grinding as fine as possible. For bread, you can grind a little less fine with good results, and it'll go faster.
Flaker Mill Attachment Will easily flake most small, dry grains for breakfast cereals, snacks, cookies, etc. Make your own oatmeal, or use wheat or other grains for a little variety. (Hard wheat tends to shatter instead of becoming flakes, but soft wheat works great.) Lets you store grains whole instead of flaked or rolled, for greatly improved storage life.
Slicer/Shredder Attachment Comes with 3 different cutter drums to process vegetables, fruits, cheese, nuts, etc.
Meat Grinder Attachment Minces meat, vegetables, fruit, bread, etc.
Hand Base Made of a solid piece of quality hardwood plywood almost 1.25" thick. It clamps to any sturdy countertop or table with at least 1.5" of overhang. It'll work with a little less overhang, but won't mount quite as sturdily.
Motorized Base Powered by a high quality Bosch motor. It's much quieter than most electric mills; you can easily hold a conversation while it's running. With the Grain Mill attached, size is 5"w x 9.5"d x 16.5"h (hopper is 6" wide), weight is 5 lbs. -- takes very little space on the counter, or can easily be moved out of the way.
Adapters for Stand Mixers Use your Family Grain Mill attachments with the adapter on your mixer, or without the adapter on the Family Mill Hand Base.
KitchenAid - works with all attachments, requires at least 325 watt mixer
